Sharm El Sheikh for UK Travellers: The Complete 2026 Guide

August 8, 2026

Short flight, guaranteed sunshine and superb value make Sharm El Sheikh one of the UK’s favourite winter-sun escapes. Here’s everything a British traveller needs to plan a smooth 2026 trip.

Getting there from the UK

Direct and charter flights run from major UK airports — including London Gatwick, Manchester and Birmingham — to Sharm El Sheikh International Airport (SSH), taking around 5.5–6 hours. You can book a package (look for ATOL protection) or arrange your own flights and hotel. For a smooth landing, see our airport arrivals guide — and consider a private VIP airport transfer so a driver is waiting for you.

Do UK travellers need a visa?

Two options: a free Sinai-only entry stamp (up to 15 days if you stay in the Sharm / South Sinai resort area), or the US$30 e-Visa / visa on arrival if you’ll visit Cairo or Luxor or stay longer. Bring the fee in cash US dollars. Full details in our Egypt visa guide.

Money and practicalities

The local currency is the Egyptian pound; hotels and larger shops take cards, but carry cash for markets, taxis and tips. Egypt is roughly 2 hours ahead of the UK, and English is widely spoken in the resorts.

The best time to go

Sharm is a year-round destination, but for UK travellers the sweet spot is October to April — warm, comfortable days of around 20–24°C while home is grey. See our winter guide.

What to book

The classics: a White Island & Ras Mohammed snorkeling boat trip (see our best snorkeling spots), a quad-bike desert safari with a Bedouin dinner, and a bucket-list day trip to Cairo and the Pyramids by air. For a special occasion, treat yourselves to a private yacht charter. And yes — Sharm is safe.
